Fantastic time with Nambitha Ben-Mazwi as she opens up on her Empini journey

Nambitha Ben-Mazwi returns in Empini S2 as Ndoni Themba- a deeply troubled private security bodyguard in search of answers surrounding her father’s death. The role earned her the Best Actress award at the 2024 National Film and Television Awards.

With the premier of  Empini S2 on Showmax this 4th March 2025, Nambitha chats to Showmax about her role in the hit show, which was one of the 10 most streamed titles on Showmax last year.

Would you consider Empini to be your most demanding role?

Not the most demanding – I actually hoped for more fights, stunts, and physicality. However, it has been the most enriching, teaching me valuable lessons both on and off screen. I enjoyed setting the tone on set, fostering team-building, and developing leadership skills. We went through a lot as a cast and crew, which brought us closer, and I learned to lead from behind. It was a transformative experience.

Woman to woman, what advice would you give Ndoni if you met her in a parallel universe?

I’d tell her to heal her inner child and that what happened wasn’t her fault. She should trust herself and hold onto her truth, regardless of others’ opinions. Ndoni has been gaslit her whole life, internalising trauma that shaped how she presents herself. I’d encourage her to be gentle with herself, to let go of defensiveness, and to embrace healing without seeking external validation.

How did you de-role after playing Ndoni?

De-roling is crucial for actors, especially those who haven’t formally studied the craft. I prioritise mental well-being to ensure I don’t carry emotional baggage into my next role. After every production, I take trips – to the bush (Kruger, Dullstroom) or an island, where I snorkel and reconnect with myself. My faith is a cornerstone of my identity, helping me re-centre. Therapy is also a big part of my routine – our industry demands it.

What aspects of Ndoni’s journey in Season 2 excited you the most?

I loved exploring Ndoni as a colleague in the VIP bodyguard service – her passion for the job, her advocacy for her team, and her deep commitment to protecting others. We also delve into her complex relationship with her mother, exposing deep wounds and the healing process. Plus the romance with Zenzele adds a softer, more vulnerable side to her character, which I really enjoyed portraying.

Was there a moment from Season 2 that was particularly challenging or rewarding? Definitely the final episode! It was a culmination of everything – my personal challenges, the injury I worked through, and six months of back rehabilitation. Many of my stunts were performed through pain, teaching me resilience. That finale was incredibly emotional and cathartic, and I believe the audience will appreciate the full-circle moment.

What’s your fondest memory on set?

The camaraderie! I worked with amazing, hilarious people, and our team-building sessions were a highlight. My on-screen relationships with Sandile Mahlangu and Amahle[Khumalo], who plays my little sister, mirrored our real-life bond. Charmaine [Mtinta] is phenomenal – her passion elevates everyone around her. We fed off each other’s energy, making our performances stronger.

What can we expect from Zenzele and Ndoni this season?

Their relationship is a chaotic, hot-and-cold mess – so unhealthy, yet so real. They mirror each other’s traumas, forcing each other to confront their wounds. Whether they overcome it remains to be seen, but things definitely heat up!

If Empini continues beyond Season 2, where do you see Ndoni’s journey going?

More action! I’d love to see her as a female superhero, embracing her strength and skills. I also want her to evolve emotionally, reclaim her father’s legacy with pride, and continue serving and protecting with honour.

What kind of role or storyline would you love to explore next?

Comedy! After Empini‘s intensity, I’d love to showcase my humour. I miss comedy and consider myself pretty funny. A role that highlights my comedic timing – or even my singing – would be a refreshing change. I also have my eyes set on international work, expanding my audience and opportunities.

Empini Season 2 starts streaming on Showmax from 4 March 2025, with new episodes on Tuesdays.
