The third annual Kareng Sports Festival proved its strength when the different speakers praised it for its moulding phenomenon on the students of Kareng Hostel in the North West district. The festival was held on the 30 November 2023 in Kareng village.
The festival include different sporting codes such as football, volleyball, netball, boxing, judo, basketball, athletics, table tennis and social skills.
The festival follows a partnership between Wecho Trust and North West District Council three years ago. Conceptualized on sport for social impact saw the Kareng Hostel as a beneficiary where over 200 kids participate annually.
In an event held at the council chambers in Maun on Friday, to kickstart the festival – the council deputy council secretary operations Houritious emphasized that this programme started three years ago to look into bringing recreation at our Kareng hostel.
Therefore the trust engaged and we started the partnership. At Kareng hostel, different kids of many backgrounds resulted in many mischiefs however since the introduction of six sporting codes, the kids have tremendously improved in mannerism and education.
Meanwhile Wecho Trust trustee Tsoseletso Magang outlined the achievements of the last three years of her organisation and the council. She said the NWDC proved to be a hardworking organization with a demonstrated record to uplift the community. She highlighted that Kareng despite being a remote area has nurtured national champions such as Olympiad Leungo Scotch, WAFCON qualifying coach Gaoletlhoo Nkutlwisang among others.
Magang said it’s high time sport and leadership roll out an inter generational exchange to bring the parents up to par with what sport can do to lifestyle of athlete and the benefits of the same.
One of the teachers at Kareng Hostel Duncan Mokera said the festival has been received warmly as the kids have shown talent and passion. The festival has also helped kids to remain at the hostel as previously kids will abscond school.
Other high ranking sport personalities who have joined the festival in the past include Dose Mosimanyana assistant coach of Botswana Athletics Association.
