The Upright African Movement (UAM) is thrilled to announce its co-hosting of the upcoming African Day Carnival, scheduled to take place from May 22 to May 25, 2025, in Maseru, Lesotho. This vibrant event will be co-hosted alongside esteemed partners from Lesotho, including the management team of the festival and its leader, Mateboho Pabatso.
The carnival aims to celebrate the rich cultural heritage shared between Botswana and Lesotho, fostering unity and collaboration among African nations.
The African Day Carnival promises an array of exciting activities that highlight the diverse traditions and customs of both countries.
One of the key highlights will be the launch of the Setswana edition of the Upright African Movement manifesto. Originally published in English in 2019 under the title “Dear Upright African,” authored by Donald Molosi, UAM’s previous president, this new translation into Setswana has been entrusted to award-winning South African writer Tuelo Gabonewe. This initiative underscores UAM’s committed advocacy for the full inclusion of African history in the African classroom.
Emmanuel Njang, President of UAM, expressed his enthusiasm for this collaborative effort: “The African Day Carnival is not just a celebration; it is a testament to our shared values and heritage as Africans. By coming together with our counterparts in Lesotho, we are reinforcing our commitment to unity and cultural exchange. We believe that through events like these, we can inspire future generations to embrace their identity while celebrating our collective history.”
The carnival aligns with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) goals aimed at enhancing regional integration and cooperation among member states. UAM’s mandate focuses on uplifting communities through social justice initiatives.
Participants can look forward to a variety of performances showcasing traditional music and dance from both nations, art exhibitions featuring local artists, culinary experiences highlighting regional cuisine, and workshops aimed at educating attendees about cultural practices unique to Botswana and Lesotho.
