Automotive lubricants giant, Castrol has launched its latest formulations of the iconic Castrol GTX range which are GTX 5W-30 and GTX 10W-40 at a product launch event held at the Three Dikgosi Monument in Gaborone CBD on Tuesday afternoon.
The launch marks a major upgrade in Castrol’s product offering for the everyday driver, promising superior protection, engine cleanliness, and performance in both old and new vehicles. The event, attended by mechanics, retailers, fleet operators, and industry stakeholders, signaled Castrol’s renewed commitment to value-driven innovation in Southern Africa’s automotive lubricant market. The GTX range, long hailed by consumers as “the Can of the Best,” is back with cutting-edge formulations that address the demands of modern engines, while remaining affordable for the mass market.
“GTX is the heart of the Castrol story in Botswana. These new formulations take our legendary product and evolve it for today’s realities better fuel economy, cleaner engines, and protection even under extreme conditions,” said Patrick Maipose, Country Manager at Lubricants Supplies Botswana, the authorized distributor of Castrol in Botswana.
“This is not just a product refresh. It’s a reintroduction of trust, legacy, and performance.” The GTX 5W-30, designed for newer engines, offers enhanced fuel efficiency while tackling issues like low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and timing chain wear, which are increasingly common in modern vehicles. On the other hand, the GTX 10W-40 formulation is tailored for older or higher mileage engines, delivering robust viscosity and essential protection where it’s needed most.

Both oils meet rigorous global standards, including API SP, ensuring they match or exceed international quality benchmarks. “The Botswana market is unique it needs high-performance oils that also offer affordability,” Maipose added. “That’s where GTX excels. Whether you’re a taxi operator in Francistown, a family driver in Molepolole, or a mechanic in Gaborone, GTX delivers consistent protection at a lower price point.”
In addition to performance, Castrol highlighted the “3X Clean” technology embedded in the new GTX range, which works to Catch debris, Control deposits, and Clean engines, helping reduce sludge build-up that can lead to long-term damage and costly repairs. The oils will be available in 500ml, 5L, and 210L drums, catering to both individual consumers and large workshop fleets. With a budget-friendly price point, Castrol GTX is positioned to become the everyday engine oil of choice for drivers navigating rising fuel costs and growing concerns about vehicle longevity.
“We understand that the every driver wants to protect their engine without breaking the bank,” said Maipose. “With GTX 5W-30 and 10W-40, you’re getting the best of both worlds – premium protection and accessible pricing.” The new GTX oils hit the shelves across Botswana this week, with Castrol promising wide availability and continued support to mechanics and retailers through training and promotional partnerships. With this launch, Castrol once again proves why it remains a name synonymous with innovation, performance, and trust a true partner for every driver on Botswana’s roads.
