Gaborone – Absa Bank Botswana has announced the extension of its sponsorship of the Absa Summer Kids Marathon (ASKM) for another three years, reaffirming its commitment to youth development, financial literacy, and community empowerment. The official announcement was made at a media launch event on Wednesday, 26 March 2025, at the Avani Hotel in Gaborone.

The ASKM, a flagship event promoting fitness and wellness among children, has become a platform for fostering holistic development by combining physical health with financial education. Through this partnership, Absa Bank Botswana continues to champion the FutureU Youth Account, a financial product designed to teach children the importance of saving and financial planning from an early age. The bank will invest P1.9 million in this property, along with an additional resourcesto enhance activations and bring this partnership to life.

Valeta Mthimkhulu, Absa Bank Botswana Retail Director, emphasised the importance of such initiatives, stating, “At Absa, we believe that empowering young people goes beyond academics, it’s about equipping them with life skills that will shape their futures. By combining financial literacy with physical fitness, we are nurturing well-rounded individuals who are prepared to lead and thrive in an ever-changing world.”

“Our sponsorship of the Summer Kids Marathon is more than just a partnership; it’s a commitment to building a brighter future for Botswana’s youth. We are excited to continue this journey and inspire the next generation to achieve their dreams.”  She added.

The main event is scheduled for Saturday, 26 April 2025, at the Three Chiefs Monument in Gaborone’s CBD. Last year, the marathon saw over 1,000 children participating, and this year, the organisers are targeting 1,500 participants for this third instalment. To add excitement and inspiration for the young runners, Olympic medalist and national icon Isaac Makwala will join as the Chief Runner or “Summer Kids Dad,” encouraging the children to push their limits and embrace the spirit of perseverance.

Martin Fani, Founder of the Summer Kids Marathon, expressed his gratitude for Absa’s continued support, stating, “We are thrilled to have Absa Bank Botswana as our partner once again. Their commitment to youth development and financial literacy aligns perfectly with our mission to nurture well-rounded children who are not only physically fit but also financially savvy. This partnership is a game-changer for the future of Botswana’s youth.”

Absa Bank Botswana remains dedicated to creating shared value through initiatives that promote education, health, and financial inclusion. The extension of this sponsorship underscores the bank’s belief in the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change and build a more prosperous future for all.

As the countdown to the 26 April 2025 begins, Absa and the ASKM team are working tirelessly to ensure an unforgettable experience for the children, their families, and the community. With Isaac Makwala leading the way and the promise of even greater participation, this year’s event is set to be bigger, better, and more impactful than ever before.
