This will be the 19th edition of the World Athletics Championships, a competition which represents the highest level championships of senior international outdoor athletics competition for track and field athletics globally, including marathon running and race walking.
Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, Leungo Scotch, Collen Kebinatshipi, Oratile Nowe, and Tshepiso Masalela will be representing race representing Botswana on the world stage, joining over 2000 athletes from 202 countries across the world.
“There is something remarkable about sport and that unwavering sense of patriotism it creates,” says Thembile Legwaila, MultiChoice Botswana’s Head of Marketing. “For Batswana, when that sport is athletics, a code we effortlessly thrive in, that sense of togetherness and pride is enhanced ten-fold. We remain committed to using the power of sport and entertainment to capture our audiences and bring them that sense of national pride.”
Africa will feature many elite athletes vying to claim glory in their respective events, with local viewers setting their sights on our golden boy, Letsile Tebogo, who took 1st place in the World Athletics Championship’s Under 20 Championships held exactly a year ago. Kenyan running star Faith Kipyegon, also made history in early June by breaking both the women’s 1500m and 5000m world records in the same week – and she will be another favourite for the events in Budapest, with the respective finals set for Tuesday 22 August and Saturday 26 August respectively.
Another African star sure to shine in Budapest is Nigeria’s discus queen Chioma Onyekwere, who recently broke the continent’s women’s record in the event with a throw of 64.96m.
“I’m hoping to inspire lots of young girls pursuing throwing, or to pursue anything they’re interested in. I want to tell them, ‘You can really do it all,’” Onyekwere says. “‘You can have it all.’”
She added, “I’ve said it before, but I really want to put Africa on the map and show that we’re a force to reckon with. We’re capable enough to have a seat at the table. And to do great things.”
Other stars from around the world which will surely light up the event in Budapest include Norwegian running sensation Jakob Ingebrigsten; Jamaican sprinting legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce; American hurdling king Grant Holloway; Sweden’s pole-vault prince Armand Duplantis; and local Hungarian favourites Bence Halasz (hammer throw) and Luca Kozak (100m hurdles).
A highlight will be the force of nature that is Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a 23-year-old American who has dominated the 400m and 400m hurdles in recent years. In fact, she is eyeing the 400m women’s world record of 47.60sec set by Marita Koch of the former East Germany in 1985.
“The greats always push themselves, and I want to be one of them,” McLaughlin-Levrone said of her decision to expand out of her comfort zone.
