A boxing promotion company, Scud Missile has announced that it will host the World Boxing Federation World Super Featherweight Title fight this Friday June 9th, 2023 at the lavish Grandpalm Hotel’s Gaborone International Convention Centre in Gaborone. The main bout will be between title holder, renowned local boxer Steven Bagwasi and Lunga Setimela of South Africa, with other local and regional boxers expected to make it to the ring too. Botswana’s Bagwasi is the defending WBF World Super Featherweight Title Belt champion.
Bagwazi, 8-1 (2), takes on RSA champion Sitemela, 15-1 (9), in what will be his first title-defense. Winning the WBF world title in August 2022 with a dominating unanimous decision over Tanzanian Said Chino, Bagwazi made history by becoming the first boxing world champion from Botswana.
Sitemela is, at least on paper, by far the best opponent so far in his career, as the man from Cape Town has faced, and defeated, stellar opposition since turning pro in 2016. The South Africans sole loss came on points in 2021 in Russia against undefeated Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov (16-0), and he has since rebounded with two impressive stoppage wins last year.
Meanwhile the event spokesperson, Nathan Kgabi said, “We are very excited to be hosting this fight, which will go a long in exposing Botswana talent and reaffirming the country as a sports stronghold, particularly boxing”.
He acknowledged the various sponsors such as Botswana Television, the Grand Palm, Coca Cola, Motor & Glass, BRES, DOLBI Car Rental, and the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sports and Culture for further promoting boxing in Botswana. He further highlighted that tickets are sold at Spar Stores and Webtickets outlets across the country, at P200 for General and P400 Ringside.
“This is a very important event for Botswana, SADC and the international boxing fraternity. The quality of fights under Scud Missile Promotions has always been world class. We therefore promise to deliver high quality fights this Friday, equivalent to what we see internationally” reiterated Kgabi.
He explained that WBF, as a reputable global boxing body, is home to some of the world’s most notable boxers including Evander Holyfield, George Foreman and Claressa Shields who holds a WBF World Title Belt.
Kgabi also invited members of the public to embrace the fight and attend in large numbers to give the local lads the much need morale booster and cheering..
