Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) continues to play a pivotal role in grooming the girl child for future careers in ICT, as evidenced by the sponsorship of the just-ended Girls in ICT (GIICT)
commemorations that were held under the theme, “Digital Skills for Life”. The commemorations were held in the South-East District, covering schools in the villages of Ramotswa, Otse, Taung and Mogobane.
As the build-up to the GIICT commemorations, BoFiNet offered cybersecurity training to 50 girls aged between 14 and17 years from Kagiso Senior Secondary School, Kelemogile, Baitlotli and Ramotswa Junior Secondary Schools. The wholesale telecommunications service provider augmented its contribution to the commemorations by sponsoring a spelling bee competition, where 28 girls from 15 schools in the district battled it out, demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of ICT. It was inspiring to witness the passion, intelligence and determination showcased by these young girls.
BoFiNet believes in nurturing the next generation of ICT leaders and this competition was a testament to the incredible potential talent within its communities. BoFiNet has over the years been igniting the spark for the love of ICT by ensuring that spelling bee competitors:
- Gain incredible ICT-based knowledge.
- Gain confidence by performing in public.
- Interact with each other and connect over a mutual interest in language.
- Learn to both win and lose with grace.
The winners of the spelling bee were Favour Ditsele from Mojadife Primary School, who came first; Reagile Tau from Magopane Hill School, who came second; and Katlo Simane from Baratani Primary School, who came third. BoFiNet congratulates the winners, who were an inspiration to the hundreds of students who attended the commemoration event.
This year, Botswana celebrated GIICT Day on the 12th of May 2023, and it was spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications, Knowledge, and Technology (MCKT) and Botswana Communications Authority (BOCRA).
