President of Botswana, Advocate Duma Boko, has announced with deep sorrow the passing of former President Festus Gontebanye Mogae today at around 0730am, describing him as one of the nation’s most respected statesmen and architects of modern Botswana.
In an emotional address to the nation, President Boko said Botswana had lost a leader whose dedication, humility and wisdom helped shape the country’s democratic and economic foundations. He conveyed condolences to the Mogae family, friends, and the nation at large, urging Batswana to remember the former president’s enduring legacy of service and integrity.
Mogae served as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008, steering the country through significant economic growth while maintaining Botswana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies. During his tenure, he earned international recognition for prudent economic management, strong governance and his bold stance against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which threatened the future of the nation at the time.
President Boko noted that Mogae’s leadership extended beyond Botswana’s borders, where he became a respected voice on issues of development, public health and African governance. He said the former president’s calm leadership style and commitment to unity inspired generations of leaders and citizens alike.
“Former President Mogae dedicated his life to the service of Botswana and Africa. His contribution to nation-building will forever remain part of our national story,” Boko said.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from political leaders, civil society, regional bodies and ordinary citizens, many describing Mogae as a humble patriot who placed Botswana’s interests above all else.
The Government of Botswana is expected to announce details regarding national mourning arrangements and memorial services in the coming days as the nation prepares to honour one of its most distinguished sons.
