Vivo Energy becomes the first oil marketing company in Botswana to attain triple ISO certification
Vivo Energy Botswana has made history by becoming the first and only oil marketing company in the country to attain triple ISO certification, signaling a major advancement in quality assurance, environmental responsibility, and occupational safety in Botswana’s energy sector.
The company has successfully secured the following globally recognised standards ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management, ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety.
This milestone positions Vivo Energy Botswana as the industry benchmark for compliance, performance, and risk management in a sector often defined by its operational hazards.
According to Sesupo Wagamang, Managing Director Vivo Energy Botswana, the achievement was the outcome of a strategic decision to pursue an Integrated Management System (IMS), a strategic framework designed to unify quality control, environmental safeguards, and health and safety protocols into a single operational model.
Our daily operations are now more coordinated and efficient. Teams follow streamlined processes, benefit from clearer communication, and are better equipped to identify and manage risks early, driving a culture of accountability and business improvement,” said Wagamang.
The ISO certifications are awarded only after rigorous audits and assessments by independent external auditors. The process required substantial technical preparation, documentation, system upgrades, and employee training to meet international compliance thresholds.
Wagamang noted that the implementation of IMS has already improved audit outcomes, enhanced operational effectiveness, and strengthened stakeholder confidence.
“While reducing incidents remains an ongoing priority, our integrated management system has laid a solid foundation for proactive risk management and continuous improvement. Looking ahead, we’re committed to maintaining and strengthening our IMS through regular audits, training, and leadershipdevelopment,” he added.
Understanding the Standards:
• ISO 9001:2015 provides a framework for consistent product and service quality in line with customer and regulatory requirements.
• ISO 14001:2015 promotes environmental performance by minimising waste and ensuring responsible resource use.
• ISO 45001:2018 sets safety benchmarks to prevent work-related injuries and promote safe workplace practices.
This certification achievement is not only a corporate win, but it also marks a significant milestone for Botswana’s broader industrial landscape. Vivo Energy Botswana’s success sets a new standard for compliance and operational excellence in the country.
“This is definitely a major milestone for Botswana and a proud moment for Vivo Energy as we continue to lead with integrity and excellence,” Wagamang concluded.
The company has pledged to continue investing in continuous improvement, training, and robust internal systems to maintain its certification and ensure that its operations remain aligned with best-in-class international standards.
