The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) executive committee has announced the appointment of Mabua Lesego Mabua as the Chief Executive Officer of the Association, effective 11 August 2025 (today).
Mabua holds a Master of Science in Strategic Management from University of Derby and a Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications from University of Essex.
He is expected to brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in corporate leadership and public service.
He has previously served as the founding CEO of BOFINET from 2013 to 2023, where he led the organisation to become one of the few profitable government-owned enterprises, and a successful implementing agency for nationwide ICT infrastructure initiatives and projects.
Prior to this, Mabua held several senior government positions, including: Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology, Director, in the same Ministry between 2005 and 2013.
He has played a pivotal role in the establishment of key National entities such as the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB), the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA), and the Botswana Fibre Networks (BOFINET). He was also instrumental as a lead in the privatisation of Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), the only successful privatisation initiative so far.
Mabua is no stranger to athletics. Since 2018, he has served as Patron and Athlete Guardian at the Maun Track and Field Club and BDF Maun Club, contributing to the development of world-class Olympians (Tokyo 2021, Paris 2024), African and World Championship medalists. His passion for sport and youth development is well-recognised within the athletics community.
In addition to his executive experience, Mr. Mabua has served on the Boards of BTC, Imara Holdings, and is currently the Chairperson of Express Credit. He is also a Patron of the Mbungu Wa Kathimana Cultural Society since 2022.
The BAA NEC is confident that Mabua’s broad expertise and leadership will be invaluable in advancing the Association’s strategic goals and further enhancing Botswana’s presence on the global athletics stage.
Meanwhile other appointments are expected as the BAA looks to complete building their secretariat.
