Botswana Insurance Holdings Limited (BIHL Group), together with its subsidiaries Botswana Life Insurance Limited, Botswana Insurance Fund Management (Bifm), and the BIHL Trust, unveiled sponsorship support valued at one million and fifty thousand pula (P1,050,000.00) towards the upcoming Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026.

The handover ceremony marks a significant milestone in Botswana’s preparations to host the World Athletics Relays for the first time in the country’s history. Speaking at the event, BIHL Group Chief Executive Officer, Catherine Lesetedi, highlighted the national significance of the moment:

“The World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026 is a defining moment for Botswana. Hosting an event of this magnitude for the first time signals our readiness as a nation to deliver world-class sporting experiences, while showcasing our talent, our people, and our potential to the world.”

She added that the Group’s support reflects its broader commitment to national development and community upliftment: “At BIHL Group, we are committed to improving livelihoods and supporting initiatives that inspire pride and progress. This partnership is not only about supporting an event – it is about investing in our athletes, our youth, and the future of Botswana.”

The sponsorship, delivered in kind, will support key operational areas critical to the successful delivery of the event. These include the provision of accreditation lanyards for officials, support towards the official welcome dinner for athletes and stakeholders, and the installation of screens at stadium entry and exit points used by athletes.

These contributions are expected to enhance the overall experience for participants and guests, while ensuring a seamless and professionally executed global event. The World Athletics Relays present a unique opportunity for Botswana to showcase its ability to host international sporting events, while fostering unity, driving economic activity, and inspiring future generations of athletes.

BIHL Group’s involvement underscores the role of the private sector in supporting national priorities and elevating Botswana’s global profile through strategic partnerships.
