Earlier in the campaign it appeared as if Max Verstappen and Red Bull would be runaway winners of the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles respectively, but this unpredictable season continues to enthral, with this past weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix seeing McLaren’s Oscar Piastri claiming a well-deserved triumph.
Verstappen, meanwhile, could only manage a fifth-place finish, meaning he has now gone six races without a win and his lead at the top of the Drivers’ table over McLaren’s Lando Norris (who drove an excellent recovery race on Sunday after starting 15th on the grid and coming home in fourth) has been slashed to 59 points.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Piastri are just 19 and 32 points further back respectively, and the prospect of a four-way fight for the Drivers’ title across the final seven races is becoming a reality.
As for the Constructors’ title, McLaren are the new leaders on 476 points, though Red Bull (456) and Ferrari (425) are very much in the mix.
Norris is expecting another tough battle with Ferrari at the Marina Bay Circuit this coming weekend: “One of my strengths is race pace and how I manage the tyres. Coming to Monza, here and Singapore we knew our main contenders would be Ferrari. Between Carlos [Sainz Jnr] and Charles they have put us under pressure. Ferrari will be good next weekend.
“But our car works well everywhere, medium speed or high speed. We struggle more in slow speed but, clearly, had the fastest car today. I’m happy, I wasn’t expecting it [Norris’s recovery drive] to be so good.”
He added, “It was a good result for us as a team. Oscar, I’m even happier for. For McLaren to be on top of the constructors’ for the first time in many, many years? To play a part in that is fantastic.”
Verstappen has been downbeat about Red Bull’s performance in recent races and does not have high hopes for Singapore – traditionally a track where his car has struggled to dominate in the past.
“It was just another dramatic race. Nothing was running, the car was not running at all,” lamented the Dutchman.
