The football gods have written yet another script many pundits are predicting an epic climax in favor of their nations. It has come down to the wire. Biblically, it’s a David versus Goaliath scenario in Cairo, Egypt in the prestigious African cup of nations (AFCON) group C qualifiers on Tuesday afternoon.
Minnows Botswana takes on former African champions Egypt at Cairo International Stadium in a do or die clash.
Botswana hold the qualification by the scruff of the neck with only 90 minutes to decide their fate.
Interim coach Morena Ramoreboli’s boys knows what’s at stake – to write their own script, becoming the second generation to qualify for AFCON.
With both two matches playing same time, Botswana’s national football team dubbed Zebras need to kick harder in their quest to secure last minute qualification to the AFCON finals 2025 slated for Morocco early next year.
Currently placed on second spot in Group C, enough to be counted amongst the qualified nations, the last round of matches play a crucial element in the outcomes of the final qualifiers.
With Egypt having qualified already, the Pharaohs have slowed down their massacre in the group when they played their fifth match and gotten a draw against Cape Verde after going four matches with maximum points. This could lace up some hope for the local lads who need a draw or maximum points.
For Zebras to qualify for AFCON
- Cape Verde must beat Mauritania or at least draw. This result will automatically qualify Botswana regardless of their results in Cairo.
- Botswana must beat Egypt or at least draw. This result will qualify Botswana regardless of Cape Verde and Mauritania result.
- Should Botswana loss and Mauritania win, both sides will be tied on 7 points however Mauritania will advance on head to head encounter. They have collected 4points from the latter.
- If both Mauritania and Botswana lose their encounters, Botswana will advance forthwith to AFCON.
Meanwhile the team arrived in Cairo on Sunday morning followed by light training in the evening. Zebras trained on match day stadium on Monday.
