Botswana sport has secured a major boost after the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) unveiled a landmark 10-year technical partnership with global sportswear giant Nike, worth more than P104 million.
The deal, which runs from 2026 to 2036, will see Nike become the official technical partner of Team Botswana, providing athletes with competition kits, training apparel, travel wear, hospitality clothing and podium uniforms.
More than a sponsorship, the agreement signals a long-term investment in the image, preparation and performance of Botswana’s athletes as they take on the world’s biggest sporting stages.
Speaking at the press conference in Gaborone, BNOC President Tshepo Sitale said the partnership was about ensuring Botswana’s athletes receive apparel capable of supporting them at the highest level.
“Comfort matters, fit matters, technology matters, freedom of movement matters, confidence matters at the highest level,” Sitale said.
He added that the Team Botswana uniform carries a significance far beyond its design.
“A Team Botswana uniform is more than something an athlete wears. It carries the colours of a country. It carries the sacrifices of coaches, families and communities. It carries the hopes of a nation.”
The partnership comes at an exciting period for Botswana sport, particularly athletics, where the country has established a growing presence on the international stage.
Importantly, the agreement also introduces substantial performance incentives for athletes. Olympic medals will attract US$30,000 for gold, US$20,000 for silver and US$10,000 for bronze, while Commonwealth Games medal incentives stand at US$20,000, US$10,000 and US$5,000 respectively for gold, silver and bronze.
The decade-long partnership means the Nike swoosh will accompany Team Botswana through multiple Olympic and Commonwealth Games cycles, providing continuity at a time when the country is seeking to strengthen its high-performance sporting system.
For Botswana, the significance goes beyond clothing. The partnership brings together sport, global branding, national identity and athlete performance, giving Team Botswana a recognisable international image while providing athletes with technical apparel from one of the world’s leading sports brands.
As Botswana prepares for future international competitions, the message from BNOC is unmistakable: Team Botswana is dressing for the future — and the next ten years are already taking shape.
