SuperSport Brings Massive Sporting Derby Madness this Weekend

SuperSport makes history this Saturday with “Derby Madness,” a legendary triple-header in Gauteng headlined by a high-stakes Soweto Derby and two vital Vodacom United Rugby Championship clashes, all in one province. Your World of Champions also brings the “Battle of Africa” in the ICC T20 World Cup, unrivalled coverage of a weekend where the world’s biggest rivals collide.

This weekend, the ground across the continent will shake as the most ferocious rivalries in world sport collide in a single weekend, starting on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

SuperSport is thrilled to unleash Sports Derby Madness—a jaw-dropping sports fixture list headlined by the historic triple-header where the Soweto Derby is sandwiched between two monumental Vodacom United Rugby Championship (VURC) blockbusters.

From the roaring grandstands of Ellis Park and the deafening cauldron of FNB Stadium to the imposing, high-altitude fortress of Loftus Versfeld, the Gauteng province of South Africa will become the undisputed global epicentre of sporting theatre.

As the premier destination for live sport, SuperSport promises unrivalled, wall-to-wall coverage, ensuring fans are completely immersed in every bone-crunching tackle, breathtaking goal, and unforgettable moment of this seismic, history-making Saturday.

While the day is packed with elite action, the Soweto Derby featuring Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates remains the undisputed crown jewel of African football. The Soweto Derby is right up there amongst Asante Kotoko vs Hearts of Oak, Al Ahly vs Zamalek, Enyimba vs Enugu Rangers or Kano Pillars and Raja Casablanca vs Wydad Casablanca.

Viewers can begin watching SuperSport’s digital build-up to Amakhosi vs the Buccaneers from FNB Stadium at 13:00 (all times CAT), which is available for free viewing on all SuperSport social media and YouTube accounts as well as SuperSport Play on DStv Stream channel 243.

The Soweto Derby will be available on DStv Channel 202, on Your World of Champions, SuperSport.

Matchday build-up will begin at 14:30, with renowned Soccer Africa presenter, Thomas Mlambo, anchoring alongside analysts Teko Modise and Shaun Bartlett, who have played for the respective teams. Pitch side will be Lwazi Ziqubu, the familiar face of the UEFA Champions League Match Centre, alongside former Banyana Banyana skipper, Amanda Dlamini.

But the countdown to the first Betway Premiership Soweto Derby of the season does not start on the day.

On Thursday, SuperSport will drop a special episode of SuperSport Unplugged on YouTube, featuring former big-name players who have etched their names in the history of this iconic clash: Zambian Collins Mbesuma, Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi, Mandla Masango and Innocent Maela (all South African).

Bringing some uniquely African flavour on the pitch will be the likes of Chiefs former Makabi ‘Lollipop’ Lilepo from the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as Namibian international Deon Hotto, who will turn out for a Pirates side coached by former Moroccan footballer, Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium in a fixture that not only carries the weight of more than half-a-century of history but has reached a fever pitch following recent league shifts.

This is more than a game; it is a battle for the soul of South African football.

The stakes have been magnified after Mamelodi Sundowns’ clinical 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates last week, a result that allowed the Brazilians to narrow the gap on the Buccaneers and leave the league leaders with zero margin for error.

For Pirates, three points are non-negotiable to protect their summit standing, while for Amakhosi, this is the ultimate opportunity for redemption.

Under the guidance of Khalil Ben Youssef, Chiefs are hungry to halt their rivals’ momentum and assert their dominance in front of a sold-out 90,000-capacity crowd.

Fans can expect a tactical masterclass where the Buccaneers’ flair meets a desperate, reorganised Chiefs side hungry to reclaim their status as the kings of Soweto.

The madness extends beyond African shores, with a world-class lineup of international sport.

In the English Premier League, table-toppers  Arsenal host  Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday in a match that could impact the title race, while Manchester United  face Crystal Palace, Manchester City  visit Leeds, and Liverpool welcome a reinvigorated West Ham to Anfield.

Before the high-stakes “Battle of Africa,” the Proteas must first navigate a massive Super 8 showdown against the West Indies this Thursday, 26 February, at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The stakes couldn’t be higher; the West Indies currently sit at the summit of Group 1 with a staggering Net Run Rate of +5.350 following their record-breaking 107-run demolition of Zimbabwe.

While South Africa heads into the clash full of confidence after their own 76-run hammering of India, they technically sit in second place due to the Windies’ superior run rate.

This Thursday fixture is effectively a battle for the top spot, setting the stage for the historic Sunday clash on 1 March, where the “Battle of Africa” takes centre stage against Zimbabwe.

It is a landmark moment for the continent, as it has been years since another African nation has joined the Proteas in such a crucial phase of a World Cup.

While the Proteas enter the weekend as favourites, a spirited Zimbabwe side—buoyed by the legendary Sikandar Raza—will be looking to cause a massive upset in a game that will capture the imagination of the entire continent. SuperSport will have you covered with every ball of the action as these two neighboursfight for continental supremacy.

SuperSport will have you covered with every ball of the action at the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup.

The rugby day erupts on Saturday at Ellis Park at 14:30 as the Fidelity ADT Lions host the DHL Stormers.

The Lions are on a historic hunt for their first-ever play-off berth, beginning a crucial home stretch where every point is vital.

They face a Stormers side fighting to protect their top-four standing and secure a home quarter-final, setting up a fascinating clash of styles between the Lions’ burgeoning confidence and the Stormers’ world-class defensive structures.

The madness concludes at 17:00 at Loftus Versfeld, where the Vodacom Bulls look to turn Pretoria into an impenetrable fortress against a Hollywoodbets Sharks  team that has evolved into “Derby Masters” under JP Pietersen.

With both teams fighting for a top-eight position, this North-South collision promises to be a physical masterclass defined by bruising scrums and clinical set-piece play.

Rendani Ramovha, CANAL+ Africa Director: Content and Sport (English & Portuguese-speaking Africa), believes this weekend is about much more than just a broadcast schedule—it’s a celebration of South Africa’s sporting soul.

“To have the Soweto Derby sandwiched between two massive VURC games in one province on the exact same day is a historic first, and a sports fan’s absolute dream,” Ramovha says.

“At SuperSport, we aren’t just showing you the games; we are taking you right into the heart of the stadiums. We want our viewers sitting at home to feel the ground shake with every bruising tackle at Loftus and Ellis Park, and to experience the pure, spine-tingling magic of a goal at the FNB Stadium.

“This is what the visceral thrill of live sport is all about, and it’s exactly why SuperSport remains the Your World of Champions.”
