Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin has etched his name into the country’s tennis history after becoming part of a landmark African achievement at the 2026 US Open Junior Tennis Championships in US from 6 – 12 September 2026.
Raguin was among four African players who began their campaign in the boys’ singles competition, alongside Nigeria’s Oluwaseun Peter Ogunsakin and South Africans Connor Doig and John Bothma.
The Botswana youngster’s presence in the singles main draw was particularly significant, as his progression helped produce a historic first for African junior tennis.
For the first time, three African junior boys — Raguin, Ogunsakin and Doig — reached the US Open Junior Singles Main Draw in the same tournament.
Although Ogunsakin’s campaign came to an end on Tuesday following a thrilling three-set defeat to South Africa’s Doig, the Nigerian’s run, together with Raguin’s and Doig’s progression, underlined the growing presence of African tennis on one of the sport’s biggest junior stages.
Doig eventually prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in a closely contested encounter to advance to the third round, becoming the only African player remaining in the boys’ singles draw.
For Botswana, however, the spotlight remains firmly on Raguin.
His appearance at the US Open represents another important step in the development of one of Botswana’s promising young tennis players and provides a rare opportunity for the country to be represented on the international junior Grand Slam stage.
Raguin’s achievement also comes at a time when African tennis continues to push for greater visibility and representation at the highest levels of junior competition.
While Doig continues his quest in New York, Raguin has already played his part in a historic chapter — becoming one of three African boys to reach this year’s US Open Junior Singles Main Draw.
For Botswana, his journey is more than just a tournament appearance. It is a statement that the country’s young tennis talent belongs on the global stage.
