Botswana’s President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko is set to undertake a State Visit to Luanda, Angola, today at the invitation of Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, as Botswana seeks to deepen economic cooperation and unlock new opportunities between the two countries.
The visit comes against the backdrop of a growing series of high-level engagements between Botswana and Angola, including President Lourenço’s State Visit to Botswana in July 2023 and President Boko’s Working Visit to Angola in March 2026.
At the centre of the State Visit will be efforts to strengthen trade and investment links, with the two Heads of State expected to explore concrete programmes in strategic sectors including mining, energy, transport, food security, tourism and regional connectivity.
A key highlight will be the signing of an Agreement on the Establishment of the Botswana-Angola Bi-National Commission (BNC). The agreement is expected to create a structured framework for coordinating, monitoring and reviewing bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
President Boko is also expected to officiate at the Botswana-Angola Business Forum, bringing together business communities from both countries to explore investment and commercial opportunities. He will further undertake a site visit to the Lobito Oil Refinery, an engagement that could provide Botswana with insights and opportunities in the energy and broader industrial sectors.
The State Visit is being positioned as an opportunity to move the Botswana-Angola relationship beyond diplomatic ties towards stronger economic and people-to-people connections.
President Boko will be accompanied by Minister of International Relations Dr Phenyo Butale, Minister for State President, Defence and Security Moeti Caesar M. Mohwasa, Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship Tiroeaone Ntsima, Assistant Minister of Lands and Agriculture Motsamai Motsamai, and senior government officials.
Meanwhile, Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe is travelling to Seoul, South Korea, to attend the 8th Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC) Ministerial Conference from 8 to 11 September.
With both the President and Vice President out of the country, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ramaotwana Nelson Ramaotwana will assume the role of Acting President of the Republic of Botswana.
The Angola visit signals Botswana’s renewed push to position regional cooperation, investment and economic diplomacy at the centre of its international engagement.
