Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) has announced a BWP150,000 sponsorship to the K.K. Motshidisi Foundation, in support of the NGO’s 390km cycle tour to raise awareness on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Speaking at a press conference to launch the tour, the ODC Managing Director Mmetla Masire said NCDs are a great health concern, threatening both young and old people, making it imperative for all key stakeholders to work together towards reversing their impact. “At ODC, the largest source of guaranteed Botswana diamond production in the market, we are not only passionate about safely and efficiently marketing our country’s rough diamonds, but we are equally passionate about partnering with local communities, as part of our contribution to improved livelihoods. We greatly commend the KK Motshidisi Foundation and all entities that dedicate their time and resources towards fighting NCDs” he said.

For his part, the KK Motshidisi Foundation founder, Kitso Motshidisi explained that five (5) riders, aged 62, would participate in the 6-day tour, covering Mathathane, Molalatau, Bobonong, Tsetsebjwe, Selibe-Phikwe, Sefhophe, Mogapi, Palapye and Mahalapye.

“Our main objective is to facilitate NCDs screening, and conduct awareness to these communities, to capacitate them with knowledge on how to prevent and manage NCDs. We are most thankful to ODC for having found it fit to support this initiative, enabling us to impact communities together. Our other partners are Choppies, the Botswana Diabetes Association, Life Cycle Bicycle Coaching & Tuition, Notwane Pharmacy, Medswana Botswana, Ozzy Entertainment and the National AIDS and Health Promotion Agency” added Motshidisi.

Speaking at the press conference, the Deputy National Coordinator at NAHPA, Batlhalefi Leagajang reiterated his organisation’s commitment to continue partnering for initiatives that focus on health and wellness, particularly on NCDs. He added that to support the cause, NAHPA has released resources to conduct screening in all villages where they have offices. The Cycle Tour Chief Rider is Michael Mogopa, ODC Board Chairman.
