In a move aimed at addressing imbalance between women and men’s basketball, FIBA Africa has resolved to introduce a Professional Women’s basketball league similar to the men’s BAL.

The resolution  was made at a recently held Central Board meeting of the continental body in Maputo at the weekend.

Maputo was the stage for the meeting on the sidelines of the Womens African Champions Clubs’ Cup, which brings together the best teams in Africa.

Chaired by FIBA Africa President Aníbal Manave In attendance was the  President of FIBA-World, Hamani Niang, the Presidents of the seven zones of the sport’s African Confederation.

Zone VI President Paulo Madeira attended the meeting along with Zone VI Board member Boinne Hardy, President of the Botswana Basketball Federation, in her capacity at Women’s member of the FIBA Africa Central Board.

The development will go long way in boosting women’s basketball in Africa and Zone VI member countries are urged to brace themselves for the challenge.
