Botswana and the United Kingdom are set to mark six decades of diplomatic relations with an official visit by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Prince Richard and Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester scheduled for 5–8 October 2026.
The royal visit comes as Botswana celebrates its 60th anniversary of Independence, providing a significant opportunity to reflect on the longstanding ties between the two countries and explore avenues for strengthening cooperation in areas of shared interest.
During their visit to Gaborone, Their Royal Highnesses will meet President Advocate Duma Boko and participate in a programme highlighting Botswana’s achievements, culture and leadership in areas including innovation, conservation and sustainable development.
A key feature of the programme will be an engagement with young people at the University of Botswana’s Unipod Innovation Hub, where the Duke and Duchess will meet emerging innovators and entrepreneurs contributing to Botswana’s future through technology, enterprise and creativity.

The royal couple will also visit Mokolodi Nature Reserve, where they will learn about Botswana’s internationally recognised conservation efforts and partnerships aimed at protecting the country’s biodiversity for future generations.
Their programme further includes a visit to a UK-supported child-friendly police centre, engagements with traditional leaders and organisations driving positive change, as well as an activity highlighting the contribution of Botswana’s diamond industry to the national economy.
British High Commissioner to Botswana Giles Enticknap MBE described the visit as a reflection of the enduring friendship between the two nations.
“As Botswana celebrates 60 years of Independence and our two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, this visit by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester is a powerful reflection of the close and enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and Botswana,” he said.
He added that the royal programme would showcase Botswana’s innovation, conservation leadership and the spirit of Botho, while highlighting the country’s importance as a partner and friend of the UK.
The visit also underscores the shared commitment of Botswana and the United Kingdom to youth empowerment, sustainable development and stronger people-to-people ties, building on six decades of diplomatic engagement.
It will be the first Royal visit to Botswana since the Duchess of Edinburgh visited in 2022, adding further significance to a year in which Botswana celebrates a major national milestone.
