Arsenal travel to Anfield for a blockbuster Sunday showdown against Liverpool, as the race heats up for a place on the shortlist for SuperSport’s African Premier League Player of the Month.

29 October 2026 – Some Premier League weekends build towards a big game. Others deliver a fixture that demands the spotlight.

This Sunday, Anfield takes centre stage as Liverpool welcome Arsenal in a heavyweight Matchweek 9 encounter, with the latest kick-off of the weekend bringing two of English football’s biggest clubs together for the latest edition of Sunday Showdown.

For DStv Sports subscribers, Liverpool v Arsenal is also this week’s Premier League Match of the Week, bringing a meeting of title contenders into focus as the early-season race begins to take shape.

But there is another story running through the Premier League this season– one that stretches well beyond Anfield and reaches football fans across the African continent.

The SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month is celebrating the African stars making their mark in England’s top flight, giving fans across the continent a direct say in who deserves recognition.

With the first two monthly winners already crowned and a new group of performers beginning to make their case for October, the conversation is gathering momentum.

Two major talking points. One big Premier League weekend.

And, as ever, plenty to play for.

Why this one?

THE FORM

Arsenal arrive at Anfield with the stronger league record, having made an impressive start to the campaign and established themselves among the early pace-setters.

Their challenge now is to carry that consistency into one of the Premier League’s most demanding away fixtures.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have responded with back-to-back league victories, including a 2-0 win over Brighton at Anfield on 25 October.

They will be looking to turn that renewed momentum into a statement performance against a direct rival.

The stakes are clear. A Liverpool victory would help close the gap on Arsenal and give the hosts a significant boost. For the visitors, three points would strengthen their position and underline their ability to deliver when the pressure rises.

Anfield will be charged. Arsenal will be tested. And Liverpool will know that a performance of this magnitude could set the tone for the weeks ahead.

The Stage: Anfield

Few venues give a fixture quite the same sense of occasion. Liverpool v Arsenal has produced memorable moments, title-race twists and contests between some of the Premier League’s finest players.

This latest meeting arrives with both clubs having ambitions near the top of the table and little room for complacency.

Liverpool will want to use the energy of their home crowd to press aggressively, move the ball quickly and make Arsenal uncomfortable from the opening whistle.

Arsenal, in turn, must remain composed, find ways through the press and avoid allowing the atmosphere to dictate their decisions.

The opening exchanges could be crucial. If Liverpool start quickly, Anfield could become a powerful force. If Arsenal settle into their rhythm and control possession, they may be able to quiet the crowd and make the game a more measured tactical contest.

The Stakes

It may still be early in the season, but matches between leading contenders can become reference points when the campaign is eventually written about.

For Liverpool, this is an opportunity to make up ground and show that they can compete with the teams setting the pace.

For Arsenal, it is a chance to protect their advantage and demonstrate that their strong start can withstand one of the toughest tests on the calendar.

There is also the question of momentum. A victory can strengthen belief, while a defeat can create fresh pressure and give a rival renewed confidence.

Neither side will consider the title race settled in November. But both will understand the value of a result that sends a message to the rest of the division.

The Battle Within the Battle

Every great fixture has another game happening inside it.

For Liverpool v Arsenal, the midfield contest could prove decisive. Liverpool will want to win the ball high up the pitch and turn pressure into quick attacking opportunities.

Arsenal will look to play through that press, retain possession and find space between Liverpool’s midfield and defence.

Then there is the battle in transition. Liverpool’s attacking ambition can leave spaces when possession is lost, and Arsenal will look to exploit those moments with quick forward movement.

The hosts must balance their desire to attack with the discipline required to prevent dangerous counter-attacks.

The individual match-ups will matter, too. Liverpool need their forward players to find space against Arsenal’s defensive structure, while Arsenal will look to use their attacking movement to stretch the home side and create openings.

One pass, one turnover, one moment of individual quality – that may be all it takes to decide a contest of this magnitude.

Liverpool v Arsenal kicks off at 18:30 CAT on Sunday, 1 November, live on SuperSport Premier League, Channel 203.

Beyond the Showdown: Africa’s Premier League Stars Take Centre.

While Liverpool and Arsenal command the weekend spotlight, another competition is inviting fans across Africa to make their voices heard.

The SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month celebrates the outstanding contributions of African footballers in the Premier League, giving supporters across the continent the opportunity to help decide which star deserves monthly recognition.

Launched in September, the initiative is a pan-African fan-voted award accessible across MultiChoice markets, including Francophone clusters.

It places supporters at the heart of the conversation, creating a platform to celebrate African talent on one of the world’s biggest football stages.

The first two winners have already been crowned – and the race for the next award is beginning to take shape.

The First Winner: Bryan Mbeumo Sets the Standard

Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo claimed the inaugural SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month award for August 2026.

Mbeumo made an immediate impression at the start of the season, with his memorable lobbed finish in a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town becoming a standout moment. His direct attacking play, relentless running and ability to create danger helped him win the support of fans across Africa.

His victory set the tone for an award built around the performances that matter to supporters – and the power of fans to decide who deserves the recognition.

September Belongs to Antoine Semenyo

Ghana international Antoine Semenyo followed Mbeumo by winning the September award after an outstanding month for Manchester City.

Semenyo recorded two goals and two assists across three Premier League matches in September, making a decisive contribution to City’s campaign.

His performances included a goal contribution in a narrow victory over Coventry City and a standout display against Sunderland, when he scored twice and helped create another goal in a thrilling 5-3 win.

Semenyo secured 66.83% of the fan vote, finishing ahead of the other nominees and underlining the enthusiasm with which supporters across Africa have embraced the new award.

Two months. Two winners. And a growing platform for African football’s biggest Premier League stories.

But who will be next?

Who is making a case for October?

The October race is beginning to take shape, with several African players producing encouraging returns in recent Premier League appearances.

While the official shortlist has not yet been confirmed, a number of names are already worth watching as the month progresses.

Bryan Mbeumo has continued to make his presence felt, with two goals across two games in the current assessment period. Having won the inaugural award, he will be a familiar name for fans watching the emerging contenders.

Nicolas Jackson, who was also among September’s nominees, has registered one goal in two games and remains a player to watch.

Omar Marmoush has also found the net once in two games, while Brandon Thomas-Asante has delivered two assists in two appearances.

Alex Iwobi has added a goal in two games, and Abdoul Ouattara has recorded one goal and one assist across two games.

These early returns offer plenty for fans to debate as the next voting round approaches. The eventual shortlist will be determined through the award’s selection process, based on performances during the month.

The question is no longer whether African players are shaping the Premier League story. It is which of them will make the strongest case for the next crown.

You pick. Africa decides.

The SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month is about more than recognising individual performances. It is about giving fans across Africa a direct voice in celebrating the players who represent the continent on one of football’s biggest stages.

Every month, standout African Premier League performers are shortlisted, before fans are given a 72-hour voting window to choose their favourite.

The winner receives the SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month award, with a trophy presentation and exclusive content captured with the player.

Every monthly winner will also enter the race to become the first-ever SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Season, turning each monthly award into part of a wider, season-long celebration of African talent.

The October vote is not open yet, but fans do not have to wait to get involved.

From the goals that win matches to the performances that define a month, African players continue to shape the Premier League’s story.
