Mmasengwe Crafting Heritage will this Saturday host the eighth edition of its Crochet and Hand Loom Session, bringing together crafters and beginners for a day dedicated to preserving traditional skills, promoting creativity and encouraging mental wellness through fibre arts.
The session will take place at At Nine Eatery & Cocktail in Gaborone from 12 noon, with participation limited to 15 people to ensure an interactive learning experience. Participants can register at P400, excluding a starter kit, or P875 with the kit included.
Founded by Opelo Letshwiti, Mmasengwe Crafting Heritage was established to preserve and celebrate traditional crafting knowledge while creating a welcoming space where people of all ages and skill levels can learn, create and connect.
The initiative traces its roots to Letshwiti’s own journey, which began in 2020 when she discovered hand looming as a way to slow down, reconnect with herself and manage the demands of everyday life. That personal experience inspired her to begin teaching others before officially launching the public Crochet and Hand Loom Sessions in 2024.
The organisation is named after Letshwiti’s late mother, Mmasengwe, a farmer, mother and respected craftswoman whose passion for crochet inspired what has become a growing creative community dedicated to keeping traditional skills alive.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s session, Letshwiti said the workshops have evolved beyond simply teaching people how to crochet or use a hand loom.
“What started as a personal journey of finding peace through hand looming has grown into a community where people come to learn, connect and discover the therapeutic power of creating with their own hands. Every session reminds us that creativity can transform not only what we make, but also how we feel.”
She said preserving traditional crafts remained central to the initiative’s mission, describing every gathering as a continuation of a family legacy.
“Mmasengwe was more than my mother; she was my first teacher. Naming this initiative after her is our way of ensuring that the knowledge she passed down continues to live on through every stitch, every loop and every person who joins our sessions. Heritage survives when it is shared.”
Letshwiti added that growing scientific evidence highlighting the mental health and cognitive benefits of fibre arts reinforced the importance of the programme.
“Research continues to show that crochet and hand looming support mindfulness, reduce stress and stimulate learning. Our sessions intentionally create a relaxed environment where people can slow down, recharge, make meaningful connections and leave with both a new skill and renewed confidence.”
Studies have shown that fibre arts such as crochet improve attention, strengthen fine motor skills, encourage problem-solving and promote neuroplasticity by stimulating the brain’s ability to form new neural connections. The repetitive movements involved in crochet and hand looming are also associated with reduced stress levels and improved focus.
The eighth session is expected to attract both returning participants and newcomers seeking an opportunity to learn traditional crafts while experiencing their social and wellness benefits.
